The Ultimate All-in-One Running Experience

Project Overview

Backround

RUNNR is an all-in-one fitness app designed to streamline the running experience. It combines goal-setting, run tracking, and music in one platform — ideal for runners who want everything in one place, without switching between apps.

Problem Statement

Runners often juggle several apps to track progress, stay motivated, and listen to music. This creates a fragmented experience that disrupts focus. The app addresses this by integrating these features into one cohesive, enjoyable journey.

Objective

Design a fitness app that makes running more engaging and accessible by merging personalised goals, accurate run tracking, and music that matches users’ moods.

The goal: to create a smooth, motivating experience that helps runners stay consistent.

Method: Double Diamond - Discover, Define, Develop & Deliver.

Timeline: 3 weeks

Research

User Interview

Understanding real runners' behaviours and frustrations shaped the foundation of this project. I interviewed running enthusiasts to uncover their habits, needs, and pain points when it comes to running and music.

Using a structured interview guide — I had open conversations that revealed practical challenges and emotional motivations — insights that directly influenced the app’s features.

Key Insights

After the interviews, I uncovered key user insights:

  • Clear, daily goals help runners stay committed and track progress.

  • Motivation tends to dip during longer sessions — especially without external support.

  • Music plays a huge role in maintaining focus and energy during workouts.

User Persona

To keep the design human-centred, I developed a user persona based on these insights. This helped me stay grounded in the needs, goals, and frustrations of real runners throughout the design process.

Competitor Analysis

Analysing direct and indirect competitors in the fitness space helped uncover opportunities for differentiation. While many apps excel in tracking or music individually, very few combine them into one seamless flow — which became RUNNR’s unique value proposition.

Design

Wireframes

I began with low-fidelity wireframes to define the app’s structure and user journey. These helped map out the navigation and interaction flow, focusing on core features like run tracking, playlist selection, and goal-setting.

Style Guide

The visual identity of this app was designed to feel energising and focused. I created a style guide that covered branding, colour palette, typography, and iconography — all aimed at reinforcing a motivational and user-friendly tone.

High-Fidelity Wireframes

Bringing the app to life through high-fidelity wireframes, I refined the interface using the style guide. The focus was on clarity, consistency, and creating a visually-driven experience that encourages users to engage with their goals.

Usability Testing

Preparation

User testing helped validate design decisions and reveal areas for improvement. It provided valuable feedback on how intuitive and motivating the app actually felt in use.

Before testing, I prepared a guided brief plan to lead users through key interactions. I documented participants' behaviours, reactions, and suggestions.

Conducted

I obtained transcript from each participant, documenting their thoughts, recommendations, and interactions with the product. This enabled me to flag any issues and collect valuable insights for enhancing the app across future iterations.

Key feedback highlights:

  • A desire for more accurate GPS tracking

  • Requests for a wider range of music genres

  • Positive feedback on mood-based playlists — this feature felt unique and personal to users

Impact & Takeaways

Impact

This project was a solid introduction to working through the full UX/UI process — from research and ideation to prototyping and testing. It gave me real experience in turning user insights into a product that’s both functional and emotionally resonant.

Takeaways

The biggest lesson was the value of validating assumptions early and often. Even for a conceptual project, working with real users made a clear difference in the outcome. This project strengthened my ability to design with intent, and it’s been a foundational part of my growth as a designer.
